Seventeen Excelsa cedars, some as tall as 18 feet and weighing up to 1,200 pounds, recently boarded a ferry in Anacortes, Wash., for a trip across Puget Sound to the San Juan Islands where they were transplanted at a private residence. According to Todd Holmes of Big Trees Inc, a tree nursery and transplanting company in the Seattle area, two trucks with trailers and six crewmembers sailed out on the 6:30 a.m. ferry, disembarked at Friday Harbor and were able to transport the trees to their new home and plant them the same day. The project is for a client living on the island who wanted to create privacy screening as well as enhance the aesthetic value of the landscape. The company also installed smaller plants to accent the landscape, and furnished the plants with irrigation. Nancy Penrose, owner of the Snohomish company, stated: "We're happy to do the project, even though the distance is a fair amount. We've delivered trees to the San Juan Islands before and it's always a very pleasant delivery." "We generally have the guys show up at 3:30 in the morning," added Holmes. "It's a pretty early day for them and a long one at that."
