The 55-year-old man, whose name was not reported, died Wednesday following the attack near San Eijo Lagoon in Encinitas, California, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The Sheriff's Department said the man ran about 200 yards to an outhouse as the bees attacked him, after he apparently disturbed their colony while operating a backhoe. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the newspaper said.
A co-worker, described as the victim's 20-year-old nephew, was also stung but was not hospitalized, authorities said.
There was no word on what kind of bees were involved, the Times reported.
