Remsen, Iowa has halted watering during daylight hours within its city limits, the result of a prolonged spell of dry weather.
For years, Remsen was known as ?EUR??,,????'??Beer City?EUR??,,????'?? for the number of bars serving alcohol. Some believed the town of 1,707 residents had more ?EUR??,,????'??watering holes?EUR??,,????'?? per capita than any city in the U.S.
However, now the town has dried out due to the lack of rain.
Like many towns throughout the country, it has been forced to limit water usage because of drought. ?EUR??,,????'??We passed the ordinance because of a possible water shortage. It covers the whole town,?EUR??,,????'?? said city clerk Bob Groepper.
Nobody, Groepper said, complained.
Even Al Wendt, who owns Greenway Lawn Care and would benefit from boosting irrigation efforts, understands. Wendt, whose enterprise mows lawns in and around Remsen and Le Mars, said his business is down 60 to 70 percent this summer.
