The Baton Rouge Metro Council has postponed the enforcement of a three-year effort to install more vegetation around the city until January 1. The new ordinance, which requires a landscape architect to be in on the design and approval procedure for new projects, including placing more vegetation in parking lots, was to be in place in mid-August. However, the Metro Council compromised with the Planning Commission to move back the date. The ordinance also allows landscapers to install vegetation around a structure before its occupancy, rather than 90 days after occupancy. While some engineers express concerns that the new ordinance will limit the space they can build structures, landscape industry workers say they are hopeful that the new ordinance will make installing greenery easier to enforce and complete.
