Baltimore Firm Helps Pay Tribute to Brooks

The bronze statue of Brooks Robinson Jr. stands nine feet and depicts the third-baseman preparing to throw out a runner, something he did with great alacrity and uncanny skill for 23 seasons. The statue was sculpted by Baltimore artist Joseph Sheppard and completed in Pietrasanta, Italy. The statue base is a 25 x 25 ft. diamond of black granite.

A bronze statue of Brooks Robinson Jr., the All-Star third-baseman for the Baltimore Orioles from 1955 to 1977, will be dedicated near Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday, October 22, 2011.

Robinson, considered the greatest defensive third-basemen in major league history, won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards during his career and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.

The Baltimore landscape architects at Mahan Rykiel Associates (MRA) located the project site and created the plaza and pedestal for the statue.

The statue is the work of Baltimore sculptor Joseph Sheppard, who also recently worked with MRA on the Pope John Paul II Garden for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. MRA also completed the plaza adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, in conjunction with the construction of the Hilton Convention Center Hotel.
