Austin Trees to Mitigate Flooding

An Austin, Minn. beautification project, ‘Spruce Up Austin,?EUR??,,????'??? may also help prevent flooding. The 17-year-old program has been responsible for planting over 2,000 trees in the area. Now, some people in the city are examining whether trees and landscaping may be used for flood mitigation.

“They are only taking five feet so we wanted to see what his thoughts were and kinda get our thoughts on what would be on those types of berms and things. So that’s kinda where that all came together, ” says Dennis Maschka with the Austin Parks, Recreation and Forestry.

Maschka continues that although spruce trees require a lot of moisture, but do not completely prevent flooding.

Spruce Up Austin has been helping people plant honorary trees on public property since 1995. Honorary trees can be planted for many reasons, memory of a loved one, birth of a child, special anniversary, or recognition of service.
