AZA's Year in Review

Dr. Chris Kuhar was named the new chair of the AZA board of directors.
Robert Lacy Ph.D. is the recipient of the 2019 Devra Kleiman Award.

AZA is also committed to being a global leader in promoting species conservation and animal welfare by leveraging the size, scope, expertise, and public trust of its member institutions.

The AZA announced its support for the "Extinction Prevention Act of 2019" that will create dedicated funds to conserve butterflies in North America, plants in the Pacific Islands, freshwater mussels in the United States, and desert fish in the Southwest United States.
In September, the association announced its 2019 Honors and Awards recipients, recognizing the achievements of 30 member facilities in the fields of conservation, education, research, exhibit design, marketing, diversity, and volunteer engagement. The association also recognized two individuals who have made significant contributions to the zoo and aquarium profession. In the same month, AZA also announced Aquariums has announced the accreditation of 31 aquariums and zoos. In October, conservation grants totaling $278,901 were given to 15 research and conservation projects led by AZA members.
