ASLA Survey Reveals New Graduate Salaries01-09-04 | News

Each year, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) surveys the U.S. graduating class of landscape architects. The 2003 survey had 319 respondents, 264 undergraduates and 55 in postgraduate study. Respondents averaged two job interviews during their final semester in school, and received an average of one job offer. One-hundred and twenty-eight respondents reported accepting a job offer. Undergraduate students reported an average starting salary of approximately $33,600; graduate students report an average starting salary of approximately $40,700. It?EUR??,,????'???s a very good time to be a landscape architect,?EUR??,,????'?? said Susan Jacobson, FASLA president. ?EUR??,,????'??In addition to more traditional projects, like parks, residential, commercial, and planning, our members are leading new markets, such as security design and green roofs,?EUR??,,????'?? she added. Fifty-one percent of the respondents were male; 47 percent female. Eight-seven percent were Caucasian; four percent Asian; two percent Hispanic; one percent Black. The school with 10 or more respondents were: Cal State Polytechnic University, Pomona (19); University of California, Davis (18); Ball State University and the University of Georgia (15 each); Purdue University (13); Kansas State University and Texas Tech (12 each); Pennsylvania State University (11); Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University (10 each). A majority of respondents (83 percent) indicated they intended to seek state registration as a landscape architect. Ninety-three percent will seek employment in the immediate future; six percent want to pursue additional education; four percent were undecided. One-quarter of the respondents indicated they will be working in California; eight percent indicated Florida.
