ASLA South Carolina
by Staff
The ASLA South Carolina Chapter was invited by the National Park Service to participate in a design charrette for the new Black River Water Trail. The goal of the charrette is to provide master plans for two parks located along the water trail. Participants in the charrette worked on designs for the Hinds Canada Tract (near Kingstree, SC) and the Rocky Point Community Forest (Georgetown, SC). These sites will be part of the new Black River Water Trail and the design programming will include a new state park visitor center, lodging, camping, kayak launches, trails, and boardwalks.
A regional master plan for the water trail is underway by Earth Design. The charrette for these two parcels will be included in the work presented for the regional plan.
The corridor is also being studied by a Clemson University third-year landscape architecture studio taught by Lara Browning. The students participated in the charrette alongside professional volunteers.
SC Licensure Board Round-Up
The Board of Landscape Architectural Examiners met on Wednesday 8/4 for their quarterly meeting. They discussed at length SC Senate Bill 295, a bill that dictates how a criminal conviction affects licensing by regulatory board, and what crimes relate to the profession. There were a number of questions among the board members, chiefly what crimes are directly related to Landscape Architects. No action was taken on this issue since the legislature is on recess and the bill hasn't received a full committee hearing.
They moved on to continuing education audits, with the majority of them being approved outright and a remaining few requiring discussion and approval with contingencies. One particular audit brought them to a discussion on requiring those that have been licensed for more than 30 years. While the Board of Landscape Architectural Examiners doesn't have a policy in place exempting these license holders, several other licensing boards under LLR have them. This issue will be discussed at length at the next board meeting on November 2nd, with examples of other boards language used as guidance. Chairman of the Board Parks McLeod was emphatic that the message be received that Continuing Ed policies have returned to pre-pandemic regulations.
Before adjourning the board voted on CLARB Officers, and supported Carisa McMullen over Allison Fleury for President Elect, and Joel Kurokawa over Mark Arrigini. The board will meet again on November 2nd
SERC Postponed to 2023
The ASLA Southeast Regional Conference (SERC) executive planning committee, with representatives from each of the participating ASLA chapters, unanimously approved to postpone the next scheduled SERC hosted in Georgia to 2023. This was due to the inundation of rescheduled conferences postponed from the last year and a half, which limited venue availability and inflated event planning expenses. This means the ASLA South Carolina chapter will be reviewing options for an in-state conference in 2022 to coincide with the next scheduled cycle of design awards.
