ASLA Show 2004 Who Will Win The Prize? The Arizona Chapter of the ASLA is lobbying hard to have the ASLA's annual show in Phoenix. The event which attracts 13,000 ASLA members would help to draw national attention to the Arizona chapter of the ASLA and the membership's activities throughout the region. According to Ron Tatasciore, president-elect of the Arizona chapter, a contingent from the national office visited Phoenix recently to consider whether the location meets the needs and requirements of the membership. "They are impressed with the changes," said Tatasciore who was optimistic about their chances. "Phoenix has changed from a dusty ghost town to a pedestrian environment," he said, describing the numerous opportunities for historic tours, cruises, golf, and luxury resorts. "And there's nothing like fall weather in Phoenix." Other sites currently under consideration for 2004 are San Francisco and Salt Lake City. Tatasciore thinks that with all of the fuss surrounding the upcoming Winter Olympics in Utah, the ASLA might decide to postpone Utah's bid for hosting the event, which would leave San Francisco and its Moscone Center as the only other competitor. However, there is one stumbling block that might prevent Arizona from getting the nod. The new Phoenix convention center doesn't open until 2006. If held in Phoenix, the ASLA show would have to be staged in a temporary facility. This contingency might discourage ASLA members from participating in the upcoming event. The winner of the ASLA convention bid will be announced at the annual convention in October.
