ASLA Convenes Show Planning Committee The turn-out was better than expected, Saturday, January 20, 1996,when 70-plus members of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), including a representative of LASN, convened in the host city to plan for the 97th Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA on October 19-21, 1996. Executive Vice President Jim Dalton, Marketing Director Pete Kirsch, and Calvin Abe and Barry Jesmer, Annual Meeting Co-Chairs from the Southern California Chapter (SC/ASLA) led a productive meeting 3-hour kick-off meeting of conference planners who showed a lot of interest and creativity. After a discussion of the general needs for upcoming show and what committees need to do to publicize the show to attendees and the community, members assembled in groups according to 8-10 planning categories from exhibit hall design, speakers, tours, public relations, student activities, etc. Based on the ideas that were offered for discussion, the exhibit hall promises to be "really cool." "Most encouraging were the levels of enthusiasm, responsibility, and creativity," said LASN publisher George Schmok, who noted the productive emphasis on "building tools" for a successful conference. "The SC/ASLA showed more continuity than LASN has seen for many years," added Schmok. Keep eye out for more on the 97th ASLA Annual Meeting in the City of the Angels.
