Profile: Alaska Chapter of the American Society for Landscape Architects, where the Society's mission is to lead, educate, and participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments. The Alaska Chapter advances this mission by supporting the knowledge and practice of landscape architecture as a means to protect and enhance our natural and built environments in Alaska. The Chapter promotes the landscape architectural profession through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship.

 

Important events of the past year included our Annual Meeting when attendees from our interior and southeast came to Anchorage and attended a dinner where chapter goals and visions were discussed. We also had event sponsors Victor Stanley and Exerplay attend as guests in thanks for their continued support of the Alaska Chapter. Our trustee, president, and president elect met with Lisa Murkowski, Dan Sullivan, and Representative Don Young on Advocacy Day, May 1, 2019 on Capitol Hill to discuss three key advancing issue for Landscape Architects: establishing green infrastructure, funding differed maintenance in National Parks and funding for critical programs involving clean water. This was in conjunction with the annual mid-year Chapter Presidents Council and the Board of Trustee Meetings held by ASLA national.

On August 14th, the chapter organized and held Legislative Site tours of three projects proximate to each other in the Turnagain and Spenard neighborhoods of Anchorage: a roadway improvement project, a playground project, and a trail project all sharing boundaries. We were excited that a local assembly member and a state legislature stopped by, in addition to numerous community members and allied professionals to celebrate and learn more about these three projects which were implemented over a three-year period.
