When it comes to grass at their airport, some Palm Springs, Calif. residents want to keep it real.
A proposal to replace grass with synthetics grass at the Palm Springs International Airport has led to controversy in the resort town.
The Palm Springs Sustainability Commission and other residents plan to fight a decision by the Palm Springs Airport Commission that recommends the city spend $250,000 to install up to two acres of synthetic grass in portions of the airport's landscape for its Landside Landscape Sustainability Project.
While the proposed plans will not be considered by the Palm Springs City Council until next year, several residents are already preparing to present a strong fight.
Paul Ortega, chairman of the Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley, said that he finds the name of the project ?EUR??,,????'?????<?offensive?EUR??,,????'?????<? and expressed his concerns during a recent airport commission meeting.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We talk about being a sustainable city, but we're thinking about using this ... and I think it sends a really weird message to people who come to the city,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Ortega said.
Mark Nichols, chairman of the Palm Springs Sustainability Commission, agrees and said that it is ?EUR??,,????'?????<?not consistent with Mayor Steve Pougnet's path to sustainability.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The thing that jumped out at us the most is that artificial turf is either a petroleum-based product or made from recycled rubber that contains heavy metals and has been known to raise the temperature above it by over 80 degrees ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe called Heat Island Effect ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe this is dangerous in our desert heat,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Nichols said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It also kills all ecosystem beneath it and there is no science that tells us when, or even if, that ecosystem can ever be restored.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
But airport commission chairman Norman King stands by the Oct. 20 decision.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It's a fairly small percentage of green space, targeting high maintenance areas in terms of water usage,?EUR??,,????'?????<? King said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I would say this is an interim cost reduction measure that has very minimal environmental impact ?EUR??,,????'?????<???? and it certainly doesn't foreclose a very real possibility of using other alternatives.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
According to the airport commission staff report, the airport spends roughly $700,000 a year to water and maintain about 8 acres of grass at the site.
If the city implements the replacement of the grass with the artificial turf, annual savings are expected to be $70,000 with a return on investment to come in as early as four years after installation.
