With 6,400 burials a year at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC), you know at some point expansion is imperative. ANC superintendent, John Metzler, told DC Military.com that expansion was first considered in 1967, but it wasn?EUR??,,????'???t until 1990 that construction was supposed to start?EUR??,,????'??+and didn?EUR??,,????'???t.
In May 2005, 15 years behind schedule, construction has begun on 40 acres. The first phase is land, road and utility development; landscaping will occur during the second phase. The acreage will provide about 26,000 new graves and 5,000 wall niches, enough to cover burials until 2030. Further expansion is set for 2008 and 2010 to cover ground burials until 2060.
