Construction on a 31-story downtown hotel in Phoenix has begun, with the city budgeted about $1.7million for landscaping, $200,000 of which is going to buying and planting 56 palm trees. The site already has quite a few old palms, but an arborist told the city none of them would survive replanting, as the trees were planted too deep, as much as 15 feet, which had weakened their trunks.
The Landscape Architect for the project, Christine Ten Eyck, told the local paper she was incredulous that anyone would have planted the palms so deep.
The new hotel is expected to open in fall 2008 and will support the $600 million renovation and expansion of the Phoenix Convention Center.
