Joanne Arany says that Rochester, New York, unlike many other cities, has not turned its back on its historic structures and landscapes.

After a national search, the Landmark Society of Western New York has appointed Joanne Arany executive director.

Arany has 25 years of experience in leadership positions, including senior preservation planner for Syracuse, N.Y., community planner and landscape architect with the National Park Service and, most recently, program director for the Rosamond Gifford Charitable Corp., a private Syracuse area philanthropy.

Arany is an Indiana University graduate and holds a masters in landscape architecture from SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She is on the SUNY-ESF Faculty of Landscape Architecture Advisory Council.

The Landmark Society of Western New York, Inc., founded in 1937, is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting and fostering interest in the architectural, historical and cultural heritage of nine Western New York counties.
