A landscaping specialty business that makes elaborate aquascapes for Las Vegas hotels was destroyed by a fire that ripped through the Irvine, Calif. plant on Oct. 4.
Damage was in excess of $1 million, a company spokesman said, but no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Flames were shooting through the roof of Rock & Waterscape International by the time firefighters arrived just after 2:35 a.m.
Theme parks, golf courses and four-star hotels around the world boast waterfalls and natural landscapes created by Rock & Waterscape. The company helped create much of the ambiance of the Vegas strip with displays in the New York-New York casino, Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Treasure Island.
The company recently completed an outdoor display for the Wynn Las Vegas resort and is working on the third phase of the Bahamas’ Atlantis casino.
Rock & Waterscape’s corporate office, across the street, was not damaged. Thirty employees work in the plant creating large artificial coral displays, simulated rocks to hide speakers and fabricated trees and branches to mask cell-phone towers.
Several aquarium tanks being designed for the Monterey Bay Aquarium were lost in the blaze along with several other aquarium projects, Zimmerman said.
