APPA Issues Resolution Honoring PGMS

Education facilities leadership organization APPA has issued a resolution saluting the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) on the celebration of its 100th anniversary (2011). Signed by APPA Executive Vice President E. Lander Medlin, the resolution recognizes PGMS for its School of Grounds Management (SGM) and its Certified Grounds Mangers (CGM) designation programs and the emphasis on advancing the knowledge and expertise of PGMS members. It notes how these programs tie in with APPA’s core competencies in operations and maintenance and the focus on grounds and the professionals who oversee them.

It further recognizes PGMS for having provided expertise to APPA in the development and publication of valuable grounds management-oriented resources including the acclaimed Operational Guidelines for Grounds Management, and for having presented in-depth lectures on various aspects of grounds management for APPA conventions and seminars.

Finally, the APPA resolution salutes PGMS for having become a leader in the Green Industry in its efforts to advance the important topic of landscape sustainability to its members so that those professionals can utilize their expertise to help improve the Earth’s environment.

Originally organized in 1911 as the National Gardeners Association, PGMS today has more than 60 percent of its members associated with large educational facilities such as those belonging to APPA. "It’s a perfect fit for a resolution honoring us," said Joseph Jackson, CGM, director of ground & sanitation services at Duke University in Durham, N.C. and the president of PGMS.

Founded in 1911, PGMS is an individual membership society of grounds professionals dedicated to advancing the grounds management profession through education and professional development. Further information on PGMS is available online at www.PGMS.org.
