The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) will hold their annual summer conference July 17-22 in Philadelphia. The theme is ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Design Inspiration from the Birthplace of America?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Gardens.?EUR??,,????'?????<? The theme reflects the fact that Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley have the highest concentration of botanical gardens and arboreta of any region in the U.S.
The pre-conference tours are of historic Bucks County, the Morris Arboretum, the University of Pennsylvania and the greater Philadelphia area. Outings during the conference include garden tours of Society Hill and Swarthmore., with a postconference tour of Brandywine Valley, aka du Pont country, and the Longwood Gardens.
APLD President Judy DePue opens the conference, followed by keynote speaker Julie Moir Messervy, author of Outside the Not-So-Big House: Creating the Landscape of Home. Other speakers include Tom Armstrong, vice-chair of the Garden Conservancy; Mary Palmer Dargan, ASLA, APLD, principal with Dargan Landscape Architects in Atlanta; Anthony Archer-Willis, an expert on water gardens; Samuel Swansen, professor of the landscape and horticultural technology program at County College of Morris; Danilo Maffei, landscape designer with W.D. Wells and Associates; Larry Weaner, APLD, principal with Larry Weaner Landscape Design Associates; Tres Fromme, planning/design leader at Longwood Gardens; and Carol Franklin, FASLA, principal with Andropogon Associates.
