The American Planning Association (APA) recently updated their advocacy efforts as they are urging Congress to address the need for locally led zoning reforms and to administer comprehensive housing planning. According to the APA, the housing deficit is nearing 4 million homes, which is posing significant challenges for smaller regions and mid-sized communities.

 

APA outlines several key opportunities for federal action, including continued funding for the PRO Housing program, legislation refinement based on the Housing Supply and Affordability Act, and the passage of acts like the Yes In My Backyard Act and the Build More Housing Near Transit Act.

Emphasizing the role of planners in addressing the complex housing crisis, APA highlights the importance of data-driven insights and comprehensive solutions. According to the association, planners are equipped to navigate intricate challenges and contribute to more efficient infrastructure, climate change mitigation, and improved public policies. Additionally, APA endorses the Bipartisan YIMBY Act, supporting efforts to eliminate discriminatory land use policies and advance zoning reforms.
