The practicality of infusing microscopic-sized nanocrystals from wood into concrete to make it stronger is about to get a true test as researchers from Purdue University are planning to build a bridge in California this spring with the material. The chosen reinforcement substance is cellulose nanocrystals, byproducts generated by the paper, bioenergy, agriculture and pulp industries.
