Recently scammers have targeted Mason, Ohio homeowners by telling them that their yard is infested with a tree-killing insect, a local news affiliate reported.
The scammers then pull healthy trees from the ground and charge the homeowners hundreds of dollars.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We had one person say that their tree had to come down, that it was infested, and it wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t even an ash tree ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) it was a maple tree,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Mason spokeswoman Jennifer Trepal.
Although the insects have been found in parts of Warren County, none have been found in Mason, the television station reported.
However, the scam artists have presented themselves as city employees and have warned that an infected tree could become diseased and fall over during a storm.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?So far, we have not required any trees to come down,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Trepal said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We have not authorized anyone to inspect or cut down trees.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Since there have been no reports of the emerald ash borer within Mason, city officials urged residents to call police if anyone offered to cut down a tree for that reason.
