Amarillo, Texas (pop. 190,695) is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle. The city adopted its Spanish name from the yellow grass that grows in the area.

Because of the drought in the Southwest, the city has altered it landscape ordinance for new businesses, or those enterprises remodeling or updating their landscapes.

The landscape ordinance for a new business used to require that 100 percent of the landscape be living plants, whether flowers, groundcover, grass, shrubs or trees. Looking to conserve water, the new landscape ordinance allows up to half of the landscapes of new businesses to use nonliving materials like hardscapes and synthetic turf.
