ALSA Reveals Salaries for 2004

Washington D.C.?EUR??,,????'??? In a 2004 nationwide survey conducted by the ASLA, landscape architects are making 23.4 percent more in comparison to the most recent ASLA salary survey conducted in 1998. According to the ASLA, landscape architects are making an average of $74,644 per year. The ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s data has shown that this is a dramatic increase when compared to past surveys conducted between 1981 and 1987 when average salary incomes rose only six percent to be brought back down again in 1994, showing a significant loss when compared to that of 1981. The survey shows that landscape architects with 21-to-25 years of experience made an average salary of $80,273. Those with zero-to-five years experience made an average salary of $41,803 and those with the most experience, 36-to-40, earned an average of $97,564. Nancy C. Somerville, executive vice president of the ASLA, credits the significant growth to the services that landscape architects provide. Somerville affirms that landscape architects are looked to ?EUR??,,????'??as leaders,?EUR??,,????'?? in fields, which range from security design, environmental mitigation, green roofs and stormwater management. She also credits the traditional market sectors ?EUR??,,????'??? residential, parks and recreation, planning and commercial ?EUR??,,????'??? for being very strong. More than 2,400 firms and organizations responded to the ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s survey, which concluded that 80 percent of landscape architect worked in the private sector, 16 percent worked in the public sector and four percent were with academic institutions. According to the ASLA, this is almost identical to the market in its 1998 survey.
