Green Roof - This green roof has a hill which is an uncommon in green roofs. The green roof designed and installed here had the following characteristics and sequence. The site should be waterproof, of course. A minimum slope of 2% is required to move any water, with small amounts of debris that might accumulate to a drain. Anticipate access to the drain for cleaning in the future. Place a filter fabric over the drain tile to keep soil in place. The soil should be a collection of fertilizers with different rates of time release and perlite. Soil should not be over 6" thick to minimize weight. The mound is made with several layers of 4" thick construction styrofoam. PVC is not allowed because of fire; therefore, copper piping and regular drip irrigation pipe is only used in irrigation. Bark is used to conceal the irrigation tubing and to provide a mulch which will allow 25% less water use for irrigation. Today, I would plant any Green Roof in California with CA Native Plants which are very successful and provide habitat for native fauna.
