The tornado season's traditional period of peak activity has begun and continues through early July. As of March 17, there have been 46 confirmed tornadoes in the U.S. in 2014 according to the Farmer's Almanac. Thankfully they have all been minor – E2 and lower – with no reported fatalities.

On average, 1,200 tornadoes touch down in the U. S. each year, killing 70 people and injuring close to 1,500. Most of the twisters appear in the midsection of the country known as Tornado Alley, For 2014, the Farmers' Almanac, predicts that the alley will be subject to an active season, with "a dangerous flare-up in April and again in June."

They warn of a "strong tornado threat in central and southern Texas, as well as Louisiana, in the opening days of April," continuing throughout the month due to ongoing stormy weather.

The almanac forecasts a heavy storm system that could bring tornado activity in the opening week of May, and locally strong thunderstorms in Oklahoma and Texas at the end of the month.

"June will bring even more thunderstorms with the potential for tornadoes, particularly near the official start of summer on the 21st," the almanac reports.

Compared to the average, last year's U.S. tornado season was a bit of a respite with 811 confirmed twisters and 55 fatalities.
