Conference Invites Proposals

NORTH READING, MA

Restoration & Renovation--a trade exhibition and conference for the preservation, maintenance and re-creation of traditional buildings, period design and craft--are currently searching for speakers for their two conferences: Charleston, South Carolina (November 7-9, 1999), and Boston, Massachusetts (February, 27-29, 2000).
The conference audience includes Landscape Architects, contractors, artisans, engineers, specifiers, designers, urban planners interested in historic preservation and period design.

Regular sessions are 1-1/2 hour in duration and typically feature two speakers. Most presentations will be grouped according to the themes listed below. Approximately 75 people attend each conference session. Note that the following topics are meant to suggest possibilities, not exclude new ideas.

•Interior/Residential Design (lighting, furnishing, period design)

•Landscapes and Streetscapes (re-creation or restoration of historic gardens, garden/street furniture, regional planning, urban design, interplay of the natural and the built environment)
•Resource Types (public, institutional, commercial, religious, education, residential)
•Building Restoration (building envelope, facilities management, cleaning and maintenance, infrastructure)
•Materials and Media (restoration or conservation of different materials--such as wood, metal, stone, glass, plaster composite materials)
•"Green" Technology (environmentally sound materials and restoration practices)

Proposals are also welcome for the more intensive three-hour workshops, which typically have a maximum of 100 attendees. The workshops can go into a subject in more depth, involve demonstrations, and range from three hours to full-day sessions. Speakers are recommended to call to discuss a workshop topics before sending a proposal in writing. Workshop proposals should include information about the kinds of materials required and special set up needed--for example audio/visual equipment.

If you have an interest conducting a presentation relating to restoration, renovation an rehabilitation, as well as historically inspired new construction, please submit a brief abstract or summary of the subject you would like to speak about, a brief resume or biography of the speaker(s), and contact information. Make sure to also include a note as to which city you would like to speak at--Charleston, Boston or both. Proposal deadlines for the Charleston conference are April 1, 1999 and Boston, June 1, 1999.
