The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has announced the approval of six new bike routes in four states and the District of Columbia. Routes approved for inclusion into the USBRS are District of Columbia's USBR 50 (3.6 miles within the city); Illinois USBR 36, which runs 15.2 miles from Chicago to the Indiana State Line; Illinois USBR 37, which picks up at USBR 36 and runs 57.4 miles to the Wisconsin State Line; Massachusetts USBR 1, which includes 20 miles that connects New Hampshire and Rhode Island; Ohio USBR 50, which spans 12 counties from Preble County (by the Indiana border) to Jefferson County; and Washington State USBR 10, which includes 416 miles across the northern tier of the state, hitting five counties and 18 cities and towns and connecting the state to Canada. Only routes that connect two or more states, a state and an international border, or other U.S. Bicycle Routes can receive official designation as a USBR. "The approval of these six new routes shows how excited state DOTs are in growing the system across the nation. Our partnership with Adventure Cycling to expand the U.S. Bicycle Route System has proven successful we are thrilled with the momentum we have gained. AASHTO members know the importance of supporting all transportation modes, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to fully implement the national corridor plan," said AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright. Adventure Cycling provides technical assistance to states working on route implementation. The organization has provided dedicated staff support to the U.S. Bicycle Route System project since 2005.
