Working in collab-oration with artist Larry Kirkland, Landscape Architects at Walker-Macy created The Story Garden for Portland, OR's Waterfront Park. Puzzling through constraints and limitations, the design team created a two-dimensional maze with pathways of images and words.

This one-acre site consists of a 60-foot diameter circular maze; simply constructed of dark gray cobblestone and a Ryegrass turf mixture, the maze features 120 carved Carnelian Granite pieces inscribed with messages, images and quotations. Under the direction of Project Manager Mike Zilis, the landscape design team created a maze concept that combines play and art.

The cobblestone used for this maze is historic Columbia River basalt that was quarried in the late 1800s, and was originally used for street pavings in downtown Portland. Walker-Macy Principal Doug Macy, FASLA, explains, "The design creates an engaging play area without using conventional play equipment. Through the maze and simplistic granite sculptures, visitors are encouraged to explore their own individual narrative."

Winner of both 1996 Oregon Chapter ASLA Honor and People's Choice Awards, this maze serves as a metaphor for life's journey. It is a place for the child in everyone-- a place to ask questions-- an environment for learning and playing. It serves as an environment tht is rich with discoveries, time and time again. lasn
