Of the 63 accredited schools and universities contacted, 21 responded and submitted information pertaining to how many students graduated in their landscape architecture degree programs in the 2018-2017 school year. Additional data was collected by accessing public records online and in some cases data from the 2016-2017 school year was the only information available. According to the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board, there are currently 5,376 students enrolled in a landscape architecture degree program at an accredited university. Last year, there were 5,326 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled, which equates to an almost 1 percent positive net change in the amount of students enrolled.Of the schools that responded, the University of Georgia, in Athens, reported the largest number of undergraduate students having graduated in 2018, with 54 students receiving their degree. As for the most graduate degrees conferred, the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design had 45 masters of landscape architecture obtain their diplomas.
PredictionsThe United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of landscape architects is going to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026. Additionally, the total enrollment in degree-granting institutions rose 25 percent between 2001 and 2015; however, the net change of total enrollment in landscape architecture programs, at accredited universities, is actually down 10.08 percent between 2013 and 2017. There is some good news though, because the National Center for Education Statistics predicts that enrollment in all colleges and universities is going to increase 13 percent between 2015 and 2026. Furthermore, enrollment in landscape architecture degree programs is up 119 students since 2016, showing a good sign of future growth. Based on the prediction of increased enrollment given by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, coupled with a slight increase in the amount of enrolled students, the writer predicts that the enrollment in accredited landscape architecture programs is going to continue to inch up during the coming years. thebestcolleges.org also claims in the introduction to their top ten list that "The field of landscape architecture is expected to continue to grow over the next several years."
RankingsThere are two widely accepted lists that rank landscape architecture degree programs, one by thebestcolleges.org and the other by DesignIntelligence. In order to calculate their rankings, DesignIntelligence surveyed 6,000 hiring professionals, 5,000 students and 350 professors. Thebestcolleges.org used this formula to compute their list: Admissions Rate (20%) + Default Rate (20%) + Retention Rate (20%) + Graduation Rate (20%) + Percent of Students Enrolled in Online Classes (20%) = Final score. Other factors were considered when creating the list as well, such as predictors of future success and a school's commitment to online programs.
