A Quintessential Layered Landscape An Interview with Glen L. Craig, BLA, RLA of the Craig Design Group
This estate home is on Chickamauga Lake in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In designing the project Glen L. Craig, BLA, RLA of the Craig Design Group, was faced with the key task of resolving how to incorporate the numerous amenities requested by the owner into the challenging slopes on the site.
In addition to the intense slopes and the defining stonework, this project also features magnificent water features. A negative edge swimming pool, spas, fountains, waterfalls, and an Italian temple, a grotto with a children?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s play fountain, a koi pond, custom-designed arbors and pergolas, stone patios and walkways, custom ironwork, and gardens?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????are all set into a system of retaining walls. All the stonework is hand carved Texas limestone and natural stone veneers.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????When the client called me, she asked if we ever deal with slopes,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????This is a hilly, mountainous section of Tennessee. The original architect on the project had drawn the house as three steps from the lake, which amounts to about 50 feet of elevation change to the water. It also called for the inclusion of many different elements in that space?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????including patios, terraces and a pool that ultimately brings you down to the sea wall. These outdoor spaces presented a lot of different challenges from the top to the bottom.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
The house itself had been designed through three generations of drawings that evolved over a seven year period. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????When we first did the design, the homeowner wanted to change the pool to make it larger, but unfortunately there had been an error in the house construction,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Therefore our designs were all off by about a foot and had to be redone.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Looking up the driveway on the left are Dwarf Leaf English Laurels, and on the right, Mountain Fire Andromeda, some mixed azaleas with Hosta borders, Tree Form Tardiva Hydrangea, Heuchera (coral bells) and big leaf Hosta. A community park on the left of the driveway was cleared by the owners of the property so it would be nice for their neighbors. On the right of the driveway is what the lady of the house calls her ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Memorial Garden?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? with a gazebo, a waterfall and a bridge crossing.
There are two major waterfalls. One starts at the very top of the roundabout, and is visible from the whole front of the U-shaped house. The main house waterfall comes down from two sets of walls with about 86 feet of elevation change from the lake. The water is recycled out of the lake. Two 10 HP submersible pumps are out in the lake, which required a permit from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to install.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The pumps look as if they?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re sitting on a submarine,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig. There is a skid system holding the pumps off the bottom of the lake with a 1/8?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? sieve screen that is required by the TVA. The pumps are cycled. One pump runs on odd months and the other pump runs even months. The owner can also put both pumps on at once which creates such a volume of water, according to Craig, you could take a kayak down it. In these images the operation is with one pump. The water actually flows from the lake all the way to the top of the property, then over the wall and down into the koi pond which is dammed up. From there, it cycles down to the lake through many waterfalls and terraces.
According to Craig, the owner loves waterfalls and water features. As you come in the main entrance past the arbor, bridge and pergola?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????called the Temple by the owners?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????there?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a re-circulating waterfall that runs on two 4 HP pumps and re-circulates water from the lake. There are two streams. One goes from front of the home and feeds back to the river. The other goes from the pond in the garden at the top of the property, and has been terraced down to a lower pond. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We created several check-downs using a crane that set boulders,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????This enabled us to strategically catch and collect water in this pool, which was designed with a 45 mil EPDM liner. Some of the rocks already existed on site and some were brought in. The TVA required the pipe be hidden, so it has been covered with big creek rocks.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
A paved stone path leading to a catering kitchen is actually a side driveway off the main drive. Since this road isn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t used more than two or three times a year, the owners wanted it to look more natural. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We used large flat 5 by 8 and 4 by 8-foot random slabs that were laid with a big back hoe, with soil between them. The plantings include Dwarf Mondo Grass. Caterers can drive down, park on the way to the catering kitchen. There is also an outside ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????doggy bath?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? there since the owners have three labs and two smaller indoor dogs.
The steps at the front of the house and to the left of the waterfall are made of Leuders stone placed in individual ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????random leg?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? slabs. They go up to a small sitting area. The custom wrought iron fence is actually on the property line. Hunza Retro path lights illuminate the steps and the custom lampposts have Solara gas lamps built on stone posts. Those light fixtures are found throughout the property. The plantings include Tree Form Tardiva Hydrangeas and on the left, the ground cover is Vinca minor Bowles. Beyond the boulder on the left is Encore azalea, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Autumn Royalty.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????
The Leuder stone steps on the side of house feature plinths graced by urns. The custom wrought iron gate was added later because the owner wanted to keep the dogs in. These steps negotiate a three-foot grade change from the front to the back of the house. There is a planter behind scroll fence on the right that has a trellis custom built for the space. The vine is hiding the air conditioning units underneath the window.
One of the larger challenges was having all the stone carved and the lead time could be almost a year. By the time they created the templates and went through approvals, it often took two to three months for initial design while carving took three to five months. The consistent theme throughout is the limestone. Most of the homes today are using cast product, but there was no casting in this project.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The owner wanted all kinds of fun plants,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????so she ended up getting one of almost anything that exists. There are probably 3000 varieties on the site. One plant she simply had to have, and which was a real challenge to find, was Camperdown elm. We searched all over to find one, and then one day I just happened to be in a garden center and there it was!?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Plantings have become a real part of residential landscape design in recent years?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????much more so than in the past. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Over the last few years with all the TV gardening shows, the producers seem to be pushing plants,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? observes Craig. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????They?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re marketed heavily as design elements and people are hybridizing and developing different plant species.
There are even television ads, which is something we have never seen before. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s amazing to clients how many different varieties there are and since they are more aware, they become more demanding.
Landscape architects are being challenged because our consumers are becoming quite knowledgeable. However the up side is that this is helping the landscape architecture field because people want to have something that looks like what they see?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????and we are the people who can give it to them.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Over the course of the seven years of installation, the project scope changed and evolved. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The clients were very good to work for and one doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t get such an opportunity often?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Craig. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The owner was quite dedicated to the house and if you came up with an idea and got it drawn up, she would go along with it. As a result, the job went on a bit longer than expected, but it made for a very high quality design in the end.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
