A Peek Inside Frank Lloyd Wright's Arizona Home

Frank Lloyd Wright's former home and studio is located near Scottsdale, Ariz. and is the site of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

To celebrate unique aspects of their school, students in the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture will host an annual spring fundraiser, allowing guests a rare peek into what it takes to be an apprentice here.

Titled ?EUR??,,????'??Concept. Perception. Reality.?EUR??,,????'??, the fundraiser will be held at 5 p.m. May 7 on the grounds of Taliesin West, Wright's winter home and architectural studio. The evening will include tours of the desert dwellings the students build as part of their training at Taliesin West, cocktails, unveiling of a new apprentice exhibition space, both a silent and live auction of student art, and a brief concert performed in the Music Pavilion. Tickets are $75 per person and are available by calling (480) 860-2700.

The event has been organized and designed by the students - called apprentices in the school - to show the unique hands-on nature of the program.

?EUR??,,????'??The idea is that this is what makes the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture unique,?EUR??,,????'?? said Meaghan Willard, an apprentice in the accredited Bachelor of Science program and one of the event's organizers.

Since the late 1930s when Wright began creating Taliesin West, apprentices have lived in simple desert dwellings on the 600-acre site. Designing, building and living in the "shelters" is a critical element of Wright's belief that good architects must experience life first hand - the environment, the arts, cooking, gardening, solitude - to better design functional homes and buildings.
