SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Under newly appointed Chair Linda Gates and Program Manager Mona Maggio, the Landscape Architects Technical Committee (LATC) continues to promote its mission by regulating the practice of landscape architecture in a manner which safeguards the public and the environment. Since 1998, the LATC has benefited from its relationship with the California Architects Board, sharing resources and collaborating on issues that impact both agencies. During 2002, LATC members and staff have worked extensively on strategic planning issues, preparing for the Sunset Review process, and various outreach efforts. One key item that the LATC is preparing for this year is the Sunset Review process. Since 1994, all boards and bureaus under the California Department of Consumer Affairs are required to be reviewed by the Joint Legislative Sunset Review Committee to ensure adequate and efficient consumer protection. The LATC has appointed a task force which meets regularly to specifically prepare for this process. One substantial effort that the LATC has stood behind this year is expanding its outreach activities. The LATC surveyed public agencies in early 2002 to acquire a better understanding of the realm and trends of the practice of landscape architecture in California. In addition, licensee rosters and consumer guides were distributed to those agencies and additional efforts are on the horizon to assist the LATC with its regulatory role. The LATC has also made visits to various college campuses, meeting with students and discussing licensure in California. A series of recently distributed licensure posters were also specifically designed with students in mind. The LATC anticipates that its additional outreach activities to consumers, businesses, and various associations will also assist with regulatory efforts.
