This feature takes us to Woodbury Recreation Center in Irvine, Calif., Orange County, about a half-hour ride south of Los Angeles on the 405 Freeway (assuming there?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s no traffic?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????yeah, right).
For those of you who don?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t know Orange County, we?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??ve written quite a bit about the ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Great Park?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? being built here on the former El Toro Marine Base.
Orange County, or OC to some, is home to Walt Disney?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s original family entertainment vision, Disneyland, in Anaheim. OC has the upscale seaside communities of Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Laguna Beach, the more down-to-earth Surf City (Huntington Beach); the burgeoning planned community of Laguna Niguel in south county; Little Saigon in Westminster; the large Hispanic population of Santa Ana; and Irvine (pop. 180,803), one of the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s largest planned urban communities, with 55 square miles of well-healed immaculateness and order. Irvine has been rated the safest city in the U.S. The median priced home here is higher than the county average, about $710,000. Irvine was incorporated in Dec. 1971 and quickly developed a yuppie heritage. A BMW, Mercedes, or at least a Lexus, is required in every driveway.
The first thing that strikes you about Irvine is the spaciousness of its thoroughfares and the large open green areas. Irvine has 18 community parks; 35 neighborhood parks; artificial lakes; copious sporting facilities, including 41 softball and baseball infields and 125 acres of sports fields; 700 greenbelt streetscape acres and 56,500 trees.
Some think Irvine is too orderly and well-mannered. What I like most about the city is its 40 miles of off-street bicycle trails and its roomy, uncrowded parks.
Irvine is named after James Irvine who, with two partners, purchased 120,000 acres stretching from Newport Beach to Cleveland National Forest in 1864. These 185 sq. miles, or ranch, comprised a quarter of OC?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s land area. He bought out his partners and in 1876, his son, James Irvine II, incorporated the land holdings as The Irvine Co.
As urbanization moved south from Los Angeles County in the early 1960s, the company developed comprehensive master planning for the Irvine Ranch, communities with a range of housing near active job centers, schools, recreational opportunities, plenty of parks, greenbelts and open spaces. The company land has diminished, but it still holds over 44,000 acres. Today, some quarter of a million people live on The Irvine Ranch.
The Irvine Company?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s planning and housing group is the Irvine Community Development Co., the owner of our featured facility?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????the Woodbury Recreation Center.
Woodbury is a contemporary southern California take on small town living, planned as a series of five neighborhoods (?EUR??,,????'?????<????????villages?EUR??,,????'?????<????????) each with its own architecture (cottage-style, Tuscan, formal Italian and formal French, Spanish and Santa Barbara) and central park, all wrapped in a pedestrian-friendly framework. This is not a village recognizable in Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales or by the little Swiss sheep herder, mind you. You won?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t have to wait for grazing animals to cross the street before getting onto the freeway, but it is really quite a pleasant place to be.
This small-scaled 600-acre planned community will ultimately house over 10,000 residents. And as any villager knows, it ain?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t a village without a commons, in this case a 29-acre recreational and elementary school complex. The 10-acre community park provides the rec amenities for the community, including a softball and soccer field, basketball courts, a tot lot and community building. A series of smaller neighborhood parks further serve the individual neighborhoods.
Adjacent to the community park and elementary school within the ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Commons?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? is the Woodbury Recreation Center. The focus of the park is a community building, with meeting and multi-purpose rooms and an outdoor courtyard for special events. A special events lawn also serves as a terminus to the landscaped ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Esplanade,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? the promenade between the village recreational core and the village retail center. Four pools, a splash pad and spa are the primary aquatic amenities of the Recreation Center. Four tennis courts, a basketball court and sand volleyball area are addtional sporting options.
Landscaped walks and courtyards create a cohesive framework for the park, providing connections between facilities and parking. The pools and water features are designed with a diversity of aquatic experience in mind. The central pool, or ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????lagoon,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? primarily serves families with youngins. Because of the city?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s youth, only 12.7 percent of Irvine?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s population was over-55 in 1990. By 2020, 28 percent will be over 55. A ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????zero-entry?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? beach entry provides easy, gradual access. Shallow areas are perfect for the younger set, and the deeper areas give the older kids and adults a chance to play Jacque Cousteau.
Adjacent to the lagoon pool, a wading pool lets little persons get their toes wet, while mom and dad relax under the canopy of nearby shaded tables and chairs and observe their aquatic forays. Immediately adjacent to the wading pool is an interactive water garden, with both off-the-shelf and custom features. Special pavement has been designed to reflect the aquatic theme of this play area.
The other pools within the recreation center were designed for different aquatic needs. An ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????adult resort?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? pool presents a more subdued, quieter atmosphere (fewer fussing kids). A cabana for shaded seating and a spa are appreciated amenities. Immediately adjacent to the pool is a barbeque area, a buffer between the pool and the sand volleyball court. The third pool is a more serious design?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????an eight-lane junior Olympic pool, providing facilities for HOA swim meets and water polo games. Terraced seating is provided for spectators.
Throughout the design of the Woodbury Recreation Center, the focus was not only on providing aquatic and recreational amenities for the village, but to create a common area with a landscape where the residents can enjoy an evening stroll, take in the air, fragrant with roses and evergreens, let the dog cavort about the village green and, yes, maybe even talk to one of the neighbors also out for a walk. Think of it?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????? Southern Californians talking to their neighbors!
