The half-acre neighborhood park is in the Thurston area?EUR??,,????'???s new Jasper Meadows subdivision, which will contain more than 400 single-family homes in the next several years.
The park?EUR??,,????'???s cost is approximately $193,000, said Rebecca Gershow, a Willamalane planner who was responsible for acquiring state grant funds to pay for half the costs. Gershow said Willamalane received a grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department?EUR??,,????'???s Local Government Grant Program. The remaining costs will come from Park System Development Charges paid by developers of residential developments within the park district, she said.
?EUR??,,????'??Landscape Structures?EUR??,,????'??? Evos play equipment, complete with climbing cables and a slide glider, does not follow the traditional sequential, elevated platform play elements you see in most Oregon parks,?EUR??,,????'?? said Jake Risley, project manager and Willamalane?EUR??,,????'???s landscape architect and parks planner. ?EUR??,,????'??Instead, it?EUR??,,????'???s accessible from any point and lends itself to a longer, more imaginative and interactive play experience.?EUR??,,????'??
Other park amenities include the ?EUR??,,????'??Mermaid?EUR??,,????'???s Fountain,?EUR??,,????'?? a children?EUR??,,????'???s water-play attraction; a large sand play area; a double bay swing set; a single-post basketball court; a large, manicured lawn; and a picnic table area that is offset by a tall, metal sculpture designed to provide seating and protection from errant basketballs. A wooden footbridge, constructed by Tyler Parmelee as part of his requirement to become an Eagle Scout, offers an access point into the park over a small storm drainage channel.
The park site is bounded by wetlands to the south, west and north, and by South 57th Place to the east. The wetlands, which include mature Oregon ash and black cottonwood trees, provide a scenic backdrop for the park. Hyde said the developer of the Jasper Meadows subdivision, Crossroads LLC, was a key partner in making the park possible by its donation of the land and supporting the idea of the park throughout the planning process.
In the next several years, approximately 12 acres of nearby wetlands will be transformed into a natural area wetland park, which will include paths, boardwalks and interpretive signage, Hyde said. Public sidewalks will connect the neighborhood park to boardwalks in the wetland park, a portion of which will be a few blocks south of the new neighborhood park.
