A Conversation with Tolar Manufacturing Company - Q&A

Featuring Patrick Merrick, Executive Vice President

Tolar Manufacturing makes bus shelters. What makes them unique?
We approach the design and fabrication of bus shelters as an integral part of our clients' communities. We listen to clients and ensure our shelters reflect the character of the community while serving the important function of providing safe places to wait for the bus. We call it the Tolar Difference and it's what has positioned us as North America's leading manufacturer of best-in-class bus shelters, BRT stations, street furniture, digital displays and
solar solutions.

Recently we built 41 shelters in Santa Ana, California, a city with a rich Hispanic culture. The shelters reflect the character of the community showcasing "papel picado," Mexican folk art - the cutting of colorful tissue into elaborate designs. We achieved the same look with durable steel structures down to the shadows casting the intricacies of the art. What's created is a true Sense of Place???EUR???. The transit shelters blend with the community, taking on its unique personality.

Can you describe what you mean by Sense of Place™?
It goes back to designing for communities. Whether we're fabricating from detailed architectural renderings or a simple sketch, we translate client ideas into purpose-driven designs, guided first by the principle that bus shelters are part of the fabric of the neighborhood.

In Brawley, California, we took a practical approach to developing the award-winning Brawley Transit Transfer Station. Working closely with engineering firm Psomas, our team delivered 17-ft. transit shelters that incorporate reliable solar-powered illumination, connected walkways, oversize information displays, metal benches and trash receptacles. Particularly impressive is how the layout of the shelters and walkways with bright solar lighting, abundant shade trees and beautiful landscaping create a welcome and safe environment for those using public transportation or simply passing through the area.

Do you offer solutions to make the end product more economical for the client?
Our Sense of Place™ philosophy demands that we take a collaborative, common sense approach to design and fabrication. When a project begins, we focus on client key goals centering the discussion on solutions-based results to validate that our products mesh with the overall streetscape master plan. Our mechanical designers provide feedback early in the design phase to ensure what is placed on the streets is structurally sound and aesthetically aligned with the client's vision, while also being realistic about budget, delivery schedule, and maintenance.

For instance, we continually look at how the client will maintain their street furniture. Are replacement parts easily changed and readily available? Will they be affordable? Are they designed for today's urban environment? This is the commonsense approach that has guided our design and fabrication team for the past 28 years and has resulted in over 500 designs, hundreds of customized solutions, and satisfied clients, from public transportation to outdoor advertising to municipalities throughout North America.
