ProFlo's ProStrainer™ HP

Instead of being a vertical pipe in in a horizontal piping system as a traditional pot strainer is, which creates an inefficient flow that leads to untimely clogs and unacceptable drops in pressure, the ProStrainer™ HP's configuration takes advantage of horizontal laminar flow to work about 16 times longer in-between cleanings.

To protect water pumps from being damaged by debris flowing through them, strainers are an essential part of a pumping system. They have been traditionally designed as a cylindrical basket, or "pot" housed in a vertical pipe. The biggest drawback with this design is the tendency for the basket to clog prematurely because of the limited open area in a single basket and the inefficient flow caused by a vertical pipe in a horizontal piping system.

Wayne Kraft, who has been in the water industry for over 45 years designing and building pools, consulting and developing products for the pool industry, realized that the time had come for a better strainer.

"Basically in the industry as a whole, there have been no significant changes, other than possibly the chemistry, for over 50 years," says Kraft. "Ten years ago I gave up consulting and started a manufacturing company." He then developed the ProStrainer™ HP, a completely different way to strain debris and protect the pump by turning the pipe on its side and allowing the water to flow naturally through the strainer, applying horizontal laminar flow (HLF). Also, instead of one bulky basket, the new strainer uses two smaller and easier to handle baskets, and has "the lowest industry footprint and the most open area of any strainer on the market."

In the process, Kraft gave birth to a new class of strainers, high-capacity or hi-cap strainers that have higher holding capacities than traditional ones, and higher flow rates with minimal pressure drops compared to pot strainers.

A test between the two showed that, given an acceptable maximum pressure drop of 6 psi due to a buildup of debris in the strainer, "the HP strainer can be expected to run about 16 times longer than a standard pot strainer," before cleaning is necessary.

And instead of having a lid that is secured by numerous bolts as most industrial strainers do, this new innovation provides more efficient access to the baskets for maintenance via quick-release latches and spin wheels. All this and additional features make the HP strainer a groundbreaking product. More information can be found here. (https://profloinc.com/)
