The Old Pasadena Streetscapes and Alley Walkways Implementation Plan involves the development and enhancement of Old Pasadena, an historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This area includes fifty restaurants, 135 retail and service commercial establishments, 110 office suites, two cineplexes and 205 residential units. The Old Pasadena area attracts approximately 20,000 visitors on weekend evenings as well as a growing daytime employee and retail shopper population. Landscape Architects at Melendrez Associates set out to restore and enhance the historic elements and character of the very popular tourist attraction.

Gateways and signage throughout the district educate passers-by while providing landscape cohesiveness along Colorado Boulevard. As the prime director of the design team, Principal Lauren Melendrez established solutions for pedestrian and service conflicts, programming options, and connections and linkage throughout the district. A great deal of community consensus planning, and concept refinement between the many members of the collaborative team was necessary to begin implementation of the four-to-six year master plan that will activate the district even further.

Under the direction of Project Manager Dana White, the landscape plan really emphasizes unique, "hardscape" elements that replicate the existing historic features; custom-made replications of benches, paving and lighting will soon complement the potted plant material along the streetscape master plan.
