Poor Orange County, CA . . .

Orange County, CA's recent bankruptcy filing should not put on hold its recovering construction industry, economists have reported to the media, due mainly to the fact that the major construction projected is for residential building. The LA Times reports

show that O.C.'s value of new construction projects, which again includes mainly home construction, should rise 17% in 1995. The Construction Industry Research Board told LASN that they will not be making any forecasts regarding the effects this problem will have on the construction economy. One spokesperson for the board unofficially stated that, although the main problems will be in public works, there will most certainly be "a negative ripple effect on the economy, which could carry over to residential construction.

Some public projects that have been put on hold are a major freeway widening in Anaheim and plans to build a new sports arena in the same city. Of the landscape architectural firms in the county LASN spoke to, it appeared too early to know if they will be affected by the county's bankruptcy. In its December 1994 Yearbook Issue, LASN forecasted Orange County, CA as part of the top 25 opportunity markets for Landscape Architects. Whether this is to dramatically change is yet to be seen; however, LASN will keep its readers posted.
