In the 2010 edition of Sins of Greenwashing, environmental marketing company TerraChoice found ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????greenwashing?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? (misleading ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????green?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? claims) in more than 95 percent of consumer products labeled as ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????green.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? In the construction sector, greenwashing was evident in 94 percent of eco-marketed products.
Only five percent of the 5,300 products examined by TerraChoice were free of some form of greenwashing. These results, including in the construction sector, showed improvement over last year, when the number was two percent (one percent in 2007!).
It seems most everyone is jumping on the green bandwagon. According to the report, the number of ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????green?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? products on the market today is 73 percent higher than just one year ago.
In the building and construction products sector, there was a 108 percent increase in total green products offered. The construction segment demonstrated improved use of ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????legitimate standards,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? with 31.7 percent using genuine eco-labels (Energy Star, Greenguard, UL Environment, EcoLogo, etc.) However, 40 percent of construction products committed the ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????sin of the hidden trade-off,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? i.e., focusing on one attribute?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????most commonly ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????air quality,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????energy?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? and ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????recycled content?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????EUR??,,????'?????<???????????but ignoring others.
Eco certifications have some merit, but of the products certified by an ISO 14024-based program, 70 percent were greenwashing. False labeling increased more than five percent from 2009 to 2010.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Ease of access to false, completely meaningless eco-labels has become almost comical,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? TerraChoice notes.
The ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????sin of no proof?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? grew significantly, from 56.4 percent of products to 70.1 percent. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Green claims on home and family products are getting better, but the vast majority are still misleading,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? the report stated. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????If green demand is to create genuinely greener products, the environmental claims of those products must be true and transparent. This is why greenwashing is such a significant impediment to continued progress.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
