Federal Highway Administration To Be Metric in 1996

For all those involved with planning and designing the roadways, the Federal Highway Administration is developing their plan for metric conversion. In July of 1992, President Bush signed an executive order which mandated that all federal agencies develop a solid timetable for conversion to the Metric System. The Federal Highway Administration has planned that after September 30, 1996, the only construction projects that will be authorized will be those that are in metric units. This also affects those at the state level. In order for any state Department of Transportation to qualify for any federal funding, all projects must convert to metric measurement, regardless of funding source.
