U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced the availability of approximately $474 million in 2013 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants. This will allow for 52 transportation projects within 37 states to receive funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), which should also create an economic boost. "These transformational TIGER projects are the best argument for investment in our transportation infrastructure," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. "Together, they support President Obama's call to ensure a stronger transportation system for future generations by repairing existing infrastructure, connecting people to new jobs and opportunities, and contributing to our nation's economic growth." The TIGER program offers one of the only federal funding possibilities for large, multi-modal projects, which are oftentimes not suitable for other federal funding sources. As such, the popularity of the program has been overwhelming since it was created in 2009. Most recently, applications of these grants have totaled more than $9 billion, which by far exceeds the $474 million set aside for the program. In all, the Department received 585 applications from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. For more information, please click here.
