Today, thousands of people will pause, gather, and remember the 2,977 victims and 441 first responders who were killed as a result of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia twenty-five years ago. Spaces for individual and communal grieving as well as the preservation of cultural memory are made possible by reverent, intentional memorials spread across the country. The landscape architecture industry has had a unique role in shaping these spaces, including but not limited to PWP Landscape Architecture's work on the National September 11 Memorial, Lee and Associates Inc.'s design at the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, and Nelson Byrd Woltz's involvement with the Flight 93 National Memorial. As we remember the tragedy, we thank the Landscape Architects whose respect and expertise create environments that can hold the weight of human suffering and guide us towards healing.
