David Anderson, ASLA, has dedicated over three decades to expanding the reach and relevance of landscape architecture. As a Professional Practice Professor and the Associate Vice Provost for Community Engagement at Utah State University (USU), he has transformed how thousands of people-from high schoolers to university students and civic leaders-perceive and value the profession. Anderson is arguably the profession's most prolific recruiter. He created and stewards LAEP 1030: Introduction to Landscape Architecture, believed to be the highest-enrollment course of its kind in North America. By teaching over 1,200 students annually and expanding the curriculum to high schools through concurrent enrollment, he has personally introduced more than 8,800 individuals to the core values of environmental stewardship and inclusive design. Many practicing landscape architects today credit this specific course as the spark that launched their careers. Beyond the classroom, Anderson's leadership was foundational to the creation of the Utah State University Botanical Center (USUBC). For 19 years, he led the vision, design, and fundraising for this 100-acre "living laboratory." He raised nearly $10 million to transform a degraded site into a regional hub for water-wise demonstration gardens, wetlands, and LEED Platinum facilities. His ability to navigate complex funding landscapes and build diverse coalitions has made the USUBC a permanent public resource for resource conservation education. Throughout his career, Anderson has received numerous accolades, including the USU Presidential Award for Community Engagement and the NACTA Educator Award. By embedding the values of landscape architecture into institutional policy and public education at a massive scale, David Anderson has significantly strengthened the profession's legacy and its impact on the communities it serves.
