The Firefly at the Downtown Hilton, Knoxville, Tennessee

Following their acquisition of the 320-room Downtown Hilton Hotel, D.C.-based Buccini/Pollin Group commissioned Hedstrom Design to bring a Knoxville vibe to the Firefly, a semipublic courtyard supporting the hotel, a coffee shop and the Marble City Kitchen restaurant and bar. The design solution had to allow diverse user groups to enjoy the space simultaneously. Movable seating offers flexibility beneath a large custom trellis designed to provide a tangible and cozy scale against the hotel's 18-story fa?????ade. Custom stadium seating doubles as a buffer of the public sidewalk; lounge seating around a custom fire table offers a more intimate gathering space.

Barre 3 Roof Garden, Knoxville, Tennessee

As a consultant to George Armour Ewart Architects, Hedstrom Design designed a 2,800 sq. ft. roof garden where the environmental benefits of a green roof blend with modern design qualities to create a welcome oasis for this new Barre 3 studio. The roof garden, a combination of extensive green roof design and large movable planters, provides a relaxing space for small gatherings or large events. Unimpeded views of the Smoky Mountains combined with colorful lush plant material and modern seating create a memorable space.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's MLF Project Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Working with CannonDesign, Hedstrom Design prepared planting and landscape designs for the modernization of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's facilities. Traversing 10 feet of grade change, a series of steps, landings and planters lead to the main entrance. An alternate accessible path brings visitors to the front door through gardens and natural stonewalls. To help achieve LEED Gold certification, water captured on site is redistributed into planted areas, and roof water goes to cisterns for the custom drip irrigation system.

Pellissippi Place, Alcoa, Tennessee

As consultants to C2RL Engineering, Hedstrom Design provided landscape architectural design services for this 450-acre mixed-use development. Phase 1 included the main entrance boulevard with three large roundabouts, brick sidewalks and a greenway trail. The sidewalks have pervious pavers, and there's an emphasis on native plants. Landscape walls with timber detailing incorporate stone excavated from the site, paying homage to the site's previous use as farmland.
