The three pillars of sustainability"?uenvironment, social and fiscal elements"?uhave defined Richard Espe's 33-year career. From his early study of Ian McHarg's philosophy to his role as a firm leader, he has incorporated natural systems and green infrastructure, and educated clients along the way. His insights have earned four national ASLA awards and 22 state, regional and local awards. His designs express how he deeply cares how created landscapes interact with the environment, and how they engage the public. In his work, community needs are part of the overall balance. One sees this in his projects, from Liberty Harbor on New Jersey's east coast and Santa Monica's beachfront, to the James Clarkson Environmental Center north of Detroit and Otay Ranch along the U.S.-Mexico border.
