2014 Fall Educational The Ohio Chapter of the ASLA (OCASLA) hosted its third annual Fall Educational and Gala in Columbus, Ohio, in October 2014. The Fall Educational was a daylong series of project-site tours throughout downtown Columbus. There were 102 participants, and the day concluded with its Gala and Awards Ceremony. The ASLA-Ohio Awards Jury selected 14 professional and student projects from firms and individuals throughout the state. Annual Meeting and Expo The OCASLA held its annual Meeting and Expo in April 2015 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. There was a wide range of educational sessions and new product introductions from 25-plus Expo vendors. The speakers were Mark Focht, PLA, FASLA, and first deputy commissioner of parks and facilities at the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation; Julia Czerniak, immediate past president of ASLA and associate dean and professor of architecture at Syracuse University; Bradford McKee, editor at Landscape Architecture Magazine; and Thomas L. Woltz, FASLA, CLARB, and principal-owner of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Prior to the meeting, Mark Focht visited students at the Cleveland Urban Design Center in Cleveland and the Knowlton School of Architecture in Columbus. Focht participated in review sessions and gave presentations to students and ASLA-Ohio members. ASLA-Ohio members also hosted the Student Speaker Essay Dinner the night before the meeting. Knowlton School of Architecture essay winners and Expo speakers had a lively discussion about the status of landscape architecture.
Annual Golf Outing The 2015 Golf Outing drew 72 golfers to the Chapel Hill Golf Course in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on Aug. 14. The golf tournament is a fundraiser for a student chapter of ASLA. More than $3,000 was raised. Advocacy OCASLA celebrated and promoted landscape architecture during the month of April. OCASLA showcased its 2014 award winners in the front window of the Center for Architecture and Design in Columbus. ASLA-Ohio members also took part in the In-State Virtual Advocacy Month, and tweeted Ohio elected officials about issues related to water and storm water management, community design and small business growth. Chapter members also went to Washington, D.C., for ASLA Advocacy Day. They visited elected officials in the House of Representatives and Senate. They also met with the ASLA Chapter Presidents Council and Board of Trustees and talked about chapter leadership and the overall direction of the ASLA.
Spring Cleanup The OCASLA Western Reserve Section held a Spring Cleanup at the Greek Cultural Garden in Cleveland. The day began with a historical overview of the garden, followed by weeding and planting. Greece was Ohio's Sister Country for World Landscape Architecture Month 2015. Tree Planting at Dexter Falls The OCASLA Buckeye Section joined the Bosswood Tree Initiative to plant trees at Dexter Falls Park. This was in celebration of both Arbor Day and National Landscape Architecture Month.
