Centennial Hills Park Las Vegas
JWZ created a park on a site with rolling terrain and large hills. The design was developed using the topographic variations as an opportunity, not a constraint. The undulation and drainage characteristics were preserved and enhanced with native plantings. The flattest sections were designed as 100 percent ADA accessible play areas. This activity zone includes interactive waterplay with safety surfacing, bouncy toys and swings for toddlers and children of all sizes. Large concrete replications of indigenous reptiles"?urattlesnakes, horny toads and a ringtail lizard"?uadd opportunities for climbing. A picturesque hillside area incorporates a 3,000-person amphitheater with a large stage and shade structure.
Whitney Mesa Recreation Area, Henderson, Nev.
Whitney Mesa Recreation Area comprises over 30 acres of amenities spread over more than 100 acres. The project preserved the beauty of the bluffs and canyons, the view and the sensitive ridgeline in the southeastern Las Vegas Valley. Over two miles of accessible nature and rustic trails were constructed. The project includes a neighborhood park with basketball and tennis courts, an open turf play area, picnic areas, restrooms, custom tot-lot with themed town walls, Native American-themed play elements and stormwater retention and demonstration areas. There is also a BMX terrain park with spectator seating; tennis court facilities with a sunken tournament court and Armijo's Camp, a group area with tent sites, a natural stone amphitheater tucked into the bluff and an archery range.
Lorenzi Park, Las Vegas
Lorenzi Park is one of the oldest recreation sites in the Las Vegas Valley. JW Zunino renovated the historic western portion, which contains the urban lake and many buildings listed on Nevada's historic registry. Green open park space replaced an asphalt parking lot. The lake shoreline was amended with aquatic plantings to improve fish and wildlife habitats. JWZ also worked with representatives of the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Committee in recreating some of the vast history of the facility over the last 80 years, including a replica of a band shell on the southern lake island, picnic shelter areas recreated with themed stone façades and play areas replicating the built history of the site.
