The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced the 34 winners of its 2014 Professional Awards on Sept. 29. ASLA reports there were more than 600 entries.

An "Award of Excellence' was selected under each of five categories: general design; residential design; analysis and planning; communications; and research. Honor Awards were also presented under the same categories: general design (9 projects); residential design (7 projects); analysis and planning (5 projects); communications (4 projects); research (3) projects); plus the "Landmark Award.'

The award presentations, sponsored by Victor Stanley, will be held Nov. 24 at noon in the Colorado Convention Center, the last day of the ASLA annual meeting. Project information and images of the award winners can be viewed at www.asla.org/2014awards.

"Finding Connections to the Outdoors for Youth and Families in Larimer County, Colo." Design Workshop Inc.

Across the nation, children increasingly lack access to nature. Some sources report children spend about half as much time outdoors as they did just a decade ago. The Larimer County study looks at the underlying patterns for this decline, analyzing how the physical organization of cities encourages or discourages interaction with natural areas.

The Landmark Award

Norman Leventhal Park illustrates a visionary idea realized through design. This 1.7-acre park was a boost to Boston's downtown revival. Built on the roof of a 7-level underground garage, it is a model of public-private cooperation and contemporary design in harmony with its urban surroundings.
