Mentor Mornings Mentor Mornings was created by Seattle design entrepreneur and author Ted Leonhardt to give artists and designers a place to discuss career-related topics. The format encouraged questions around a pre-established subject, with a goal of gaining new understanding and insights that only an open conversation among peers allowed. Some days guest presenters were featured. On others, Leonhardt led on topics including negotiating, managing talent, interviewing and finding your passion. Past featured guests included: 2014 Apple Design award winner Chris Laurel; Jackson Fish Market creative director Jenny Lam; Noted UX leader Tracey Lovejoy. Tacoma Green Infrastructure Challenge The city of Tacoma, Metro Parks Tacoma, and the Port of Tacoma invite design teams to participate in the "Tacoma Green Infrastructure Challenge" going on through Dec. 18. This design competition will challenge teams to tackle one of three real-world site designs to showcase sustainable solutions for stormwater runoff. The challenge provides participants an opportunity to receive hands-on learning, networking opportunities, and recognition for their creative and innovative engineering design. Entries will be accepted in three design challenge categories: Industrial Redevelopment - Port of Tacoma; Urban Redevelopment - Metro Parks, Tacoma; Green Roadway - city of Tacoma. Guided site tours of each of the three competition sites occurred during November. Site tours included a discussion of green infrastructure design tools, a question and answer period and the opportunity to network with other green infrastructure professionals and interested students. The winning team from each category received prizes, and was featured on Tacoma Report and in Tacoma Today, the city's e-newsletter. Connecting North Idaho Communities For decades there's been a dream in west Bonner County, in Idaho's panhandle, of being able to walk or bike to neighboring towns along the Pend Oreille River. Some small sections of an eventual 25-mile trail between Oldtown, the state line, and Dover have been built generally following US Highway 2. These rural communities are looking for low-cost recreation and alternative transportation for local residents and to improve and expand recreation opportunities for visitors to the river, nearby national forests and the International Selkirk Loop. This year, with assistance from Idaho and Washington chapters and the National Park Service, the communities of Old Town, Priest River, LaClede and Dover will develop a plan for the Pend Oreille River Passage Trail. The Priest Community Forest Connection, a local non-profit recognized for community-based solutions to interdependent social, ecological and economic issues, has stepped up to lead the local trail planning effort. University of Washington Landscape in Motion Symposium University of Washington architects Rebecca Barnes and Kristine Kenney, and staff faculty member Thaisa Way led the Campus Landscape Framework in celebration of the release of a working draft of the Campus Landscape Framework. Attendees from the regional professional and academic communities discussed finding and debated how best to realize the potential of this campus landscape. They were informed by presentations about the state of the art of campus landscape of universities and other major institutions and corporations.
